Is there such thing as a "normal" Family {#StreamTeam #Netflix}

Thank you to Netflix for sponsoring this post. As part of the Stream Team I get to talk about a theme each month.  This month's theme is on Family.  Here are some of my thoughts on families:

Families don't look like they used to.  The Husband-wife-2.5 kids family is not the usual thing now.  The Cleavers are no longer the norm.  The once traditional “nuclear” family has evolved into a kaleidoscope of possibilities.  There are so many ways that families come together.  Parents can have: biological kids, adopted kids, foster kids and step kids.  Some families have all of the above!  Multicultural families and blended families are happening more and more.  And with all this complexity it is hard to know how to be a successful parent.

As parents we are may be dealing with things we never planed on.  I mean, Elementary school kids pretending to play "house" do not often have step kids in their stories?  And thanks to a lot of children's movies a step -mom is a horrible mean lady out to get you.  Yet, there are a lot of nice people out there being step parents. And if you don't have any step-kids of your own I am sure you are connected to some.  My niece and nephew are now step kids.

Jeannine (co-author of this blog and my best friend) has a family that includes a step-daughter, 2 biological kids and 2 kids adopted out of foster care.  They are a multiracial blended family.  And it is a beautiful family.  But it is not without it's difficulties.

My family is not what my childhood self thought it would look like.  I thought I would have kids that would look like me.  I look almost exactly like my mom.  Like,  my mom's high school friends were confused when they came for a High School reunion one year. But my kids, very obviously, don't look like me... they are from Korea (and I not).  My family was formed through adoption.  And since we choose to do international adoption we now have a multiracial family. I was not present at their births, some one else took care of them for the first 9 months of their life.  My kids life started with loss, loss of a parents and a culture.  We try to include as much Korean culture as we can but it is not the same as living there.  When I show up for conferences at my kids school the teachers are sometime confused which kid I belong to.  All of this adds complexity to our family.  We did take some classes on multiracial families from our adoption agency and it did help up get an idea of what we were getting into, but I don't think any class could prepare us for what it truly is like.

And is true for all families.  Many families have biological kids and one of them has special needs.  Or one of them has behavior problems that they don't know how to handle, or mental health issues.  I don't think anyone is prepared for that and it is not covered in our birthing classes!

So what do parents need these day to help get us get through these complex issues?  I believe it is support.

I am part of an adoption moms groups that meets once a month just to encourage and support each other.   We all come from different walks with adoption, some have adopted domestically, some internationally, some through foster care.  Some kids came to us  days old and some kids came to us years old.  But we are all there to love and support each other.  We talk about the hard things and get advice without judgment.

And since Jeannine and I both have complex families we talk to each other about the hard and sometimes ugly things of parenting.  I am so grateful for this friendship and that my kids can see other family that were formed unconventionally.

We have to find our support and we have to be support to others.  It is the only way we can thrive in this very difficult role of parents.

It is also great that more complex families are showing up on movies and tv shows.  We love Netflix for our TV watching!  Some of the shows that we like for our kids are:

Sophia the First (Blended family)
Spy Kids 4 (Blended family)
Word girl (she is adopted)
Jessie (3 out of the 4 kids are adopted)
The Tigger Movie (Finding where you belong if you don't look like everyone else)

6 ways for Mom's to take time for yourself this Summer {#StreamTeam}

Thank you to Netflix for Sponsoring this post

Summer is here and that means sunny days!  But it also means that all of my kids are home all day.  It is enough to drive me crazy if I do not take the time for myself.  Just little pieces of the day or night to pamper myself.

Here are 6 ways that I am taking time for myself this summer

1. Taking a bath
After the kids go to bed I take a bath.  After a long day of "Mommy, what are we going to do now?"  It is nice to sit and soak in the tub, and shave my legs in peace.

2. Get a little treat.
Sometime all I need is a little sugar to sweeten myself up!  I have a favorite place to drive through and get a smoothie.  So, if I am running errands with the kids sometime my only "me" time is in the car with kids strapped in sipping my smoothie.

3. Swap night with Dad to take a night off of bed time.
My Hubby and I each get a night off a week to go out and skip bedtime.  It is nice to just leave after dinner and come home after the kids are already sleeping.  I usually go to a women's bible study but I have also gone to a coffee shop or shopping by myself too.

4. Work out
I have membership to our local YMCA.  They have free childcare for members for up to 2 hours a day.  I go and drop off the kids and work out.  It is a win win.  I get a break from the kids and also get to energize myself with exercise!

5. Quiet time for the kids.
We all need a break from each other during the day.  The kids need a little structured down time.  I have my kids either take a nap (for the younger 2) or for the older one, take what I like to call a "movie nap"  We have rules that they have to stay seated and quiet during the movie.  They can only get up to go to the bathroom.  Some times I have my son read books but that is usually a shorter quiet time.  During this time I can get some stuff done around the house and marking things off my to-do list is therapeutic too

6. Watch grown-up shows on Netflix.

And by grown-up I mean not a cartoon.  After taking care of the kids all day and watching all their shows it is time for some adult conversation... even if it is on TV.  My current guilty pleasure right now is Charmed... totally cheesy but it reminds me of my youth so it is fun!

How do you keep sane during the summer with your kids?

My guilty pleasure... PEOPLE Magazine

This week I had an OB appointment.  Now that I am a mom I find myself looking forward to doctor appointments because I get a little time in the waiting room to read a magazine.  Since I knew I had an appointment this week, I picked up the latest PEOPLE Magazine from my local Walgreens to bring with me!

PEOPLE Magazine is one of my guilty pleasures.  I love to get all the news on my favorite celebreties!  I never believe any celeb gossip unless it is in PEOPLE Magazine.  I love to see the pictures of the stars with their kids... makes me think they are real people.  Ya know, like I am kinda like Angelina and Brad because I have adopted children too! ;)  Ok- I know it is a stretch! : )

And since it is holiday time, a little stress reliever is needed.  Just a couple minutes with my PEOPLE can do wonders for me!  I mean who wouldn't feel better after reading an article about Brad Pitt?!

I also LOVE the crossword!  It is the only crossword puzzle that I can actually complete!

What kind of guilty pleasures get you through the holidays?

One of my few guilty pleasures is PEOPLE Magazine   I big puffy heart love it!  It is the only magazine that I will spend money on and read.   My mom always had it when I was growing up and it totally rubbed off on me.  I don't believe any celebrity gossip unless it is in PEOPLE!
My favorite things about PEOPLE Magazine are the star sighting... I love to see famous people doing regular things.  I also love to see what new movies are coming out and hear that latest juicy news on my favorite celebs!

I also love the crossword puzzle at the end of the it.  It is the only crossword that I can complete! :)

One of my favorite issues is the PEOPLE Magazine’s Annual Sexiest Man Alive issue!  What women doesn't love a magazine full of the hottest man?  Yep- I get it every year and read the whole thing cover to cover!

Surprise!

Friends, I have been keeping a big secret from you all... I am pregnant!

It will be my first pregnancy but my 3rd child (my other 2 are adopted).  It was a complete surprise and shock to us since we were not supposed to be able to get pregnant (about 7 years ago we went through infertility treatments with no luck and then after that adopted 2 of the best kids in the world from Korea) .  It is a total miracle.   It will be my first experience with mothering a newborn since both my kids were over 8 months when they came home.  I am not going to lie to you, I am a little freaked out!!

   I am due April 7th (so that puts me at 18 weeks today).

We are having our ultrasound on Nov 26th... hopefully baby will be cooperative so we can find out the gender!   Be sure to check out our facebook page next week for our pole to tell me if you think it will be a boy or a girl!

Also this week I will be adding a Baby section to our Show Off Your Stuff Party so, make sure you link up all your must-have baby tutorials and posts so I can get the low-down on what I will need!

I had horrible morning sickness my first trimester which is why posting was scarce in August and September... but I am feeling better now!

My word of the year...

SO, there is something you should know about me... I am a little bit of a rebel [not too much to really get in trouble}.  When someone tells me to do something.  I want to do the complete opposite.  So when the idea of having a word of the year came around... I couldn't just pick ONE word... I had to be a little rebellious.

My word of the year is:
Yep- 2 words!  :)  But it is one idea so I am going to count it and I hope you do too!  I have some ugly parts of me that I need to get rid of.  Here are a few ugly things I need to LET GO of this year:

I have a strong sense of fairness.  If something is not fair for me or my kids, I get angry and that anger turns to bitterness.

Bitterness eats away at me and I cannot get past it.

To help me let it go, I am going to say this verse when I start to feel the bitterness come on "Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs."  Out-loud if possible.  There is power in God's word and I am going to use it!

I am controlling.  Not in the clean-freak, organizing way (I wish I was more like that!), but in a "let me tell you what to do" sort of way.   I like to have things go my way.  I am a decisive person, and most times I am right {ok- all the time, I am right!} It can drive me crazy if someone does not do something the same way that I would have.

Control...I want total control.  It is just not possible.

I don't need to get worked up over other peoples decisions!  When I get the urge to control a situation I am going to say to myself  "I am not them, they are not me... I am not going to think about it" {there is going to be a lot of self talk this year!}

Judgment just piggy-backs off of my controlling nature.  It is so easy for me to jump to judgement when someone chooses a different path than me.

I have always tried to keep this part of me in check, it is the main reason I am not on facebook {Jeannine runs our F&J facebook page}.  All those FB statuses to judge...Oh, I could be all kinds of ugly on Facebook.  {I am not against FB... it is just not right for me}

Another step to help me out is to have this verse memorized: Luke 6:37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.  I think the world would be a much better place if we forgave instead of judged.

I have a creative mind.  It is great when I am working on crafts during the day... but it is a bit scary at night.  My mind races to all sorts of horrible things to worry about and fear.  I have some major anxiety at times.  To the point of paralyzing panic attacks. I worry about my kids, my husband, my life.

I am letting go of caffeine this year. It is a trigger to my anxiety, so it is going bye-bye.  I have been off caffeine for about  a month and I don't miss it that much!

I have to repeat outloud what I know about my God.
My God is BIG
My God loves me
My God WILL take care of me and my family.
My God conquered death
My God is in Control (not me!)
My God is WITH ME- all the time
My God knows what is best.

So this year I am going to "Let go and Let God"!
Yep- totally cheesy and cliche but I had to say it because it is true!

What is your word of the year?  Leave me a note or a link in my comments!
