Tips for Creating the Perfect Outdoor Space

If you love being outside as much as I do, then try out these awesome tips designed to create the ideal outdoor space for family and friends. From gorgeous gardening tips to extravagant outdoor kitchens, you’ll find the project perfect for your backyard.

Blending In
Planting plenty of lush garden greenery around the entry to your home can help blend the garden and your home into a cohesive unit. Purchase a variety of mismatched pottery, and filled with abundant blooms that will draw the eye and serve as the perfect welcome to any visitors. If you have steps leading into your house, use the levels to your advantage with free-flowing vines and plants to create a clean but wild feel.

A Children’s Outdoor Mecca
When redoing your outdoor space, make it work better for you and your family. I’ve talked about the importance of spending time in nature with your kids, and this is the perfect way to spend quality time as a family in the outdoorswithout leaving your backyard. Create a kid-friendly space with easy, inexpensive outdoor activities for those hot summer months. Make your own water table for them to splash in, install a sand box (with a lid to keep out local cats at night), or purchase a fun swing set sure to provide hours of entertainment.

Espalier
This foreign term could be the thing to change your outdoor space into one worthy of a gardening magazine. This pruning method was originally designed to save space while cultivating fruit but has blossomed into a popular decorative technique. This method trains plants to grow flat against a wall, and some choose to train the plants in particular patterns. Use an anchoring system that prevents plants from adhering to your walls. Secure the branches and roots in place with ribbon ties that won’t delay growth, and you’ve got a wall that blends seamlessly with your backyard.

Well-Planned Plant Beds
If you’d like to make an exotic and vibrant flower or plant bed, give yourself enough room to work with. The bed should measure at least five feet front to back, with levels of plants placed based on their height. Put the tallest plants in the back and shortest in the front. Once full grown, you’ll have a dense variety of gorgeous blooms and greens.

Get Stoned
Adding in a stone pathway can create a backyard straight out of a fairytale cottage. Whether you prefer grey slabs that provide a cooler tone, or rich bricks leading to a bench in the corner of the lawn, you’ll add character and utility to your backyard in a jiffy.

An Outdoor Living Room
If you live in a climate that allows you to be outside for much of the year, expand your living quarters by creating a makeshift living room on your covered porch or patio. Wicker furniture blends well with an outdoor theme, and plush cushions can survive the outdoors while remaining comfortable. Install a flat screen on the outer wall—just make sure it’s protected from flash rainfall—to make for perfect outdoor movie night screenings.

Cooking Outdoors
If you are a barbecue aficionado, make an outdoor kitchen that Gordon Ramsey would be proud of. It’ll definitely be a splurge, but a worthy one for all the entertaining you can do. Outfit your new outdoor kitchen with modern products using the latest and safest technology for the most delicious burgers you’ve ever had. If you’re not ready to install a working kitchen on your patio, add an easy DIY outdoor bar to make entertaining simple. Mix your friends a drink or two while enjoying lovely evening temperatures and you’re sure to impress.

Lovely Lighting
Nothing ends a party like not being able to see the person standing next to you. Make sure your outdoor space is equipped with lighting sources that will add to ambiance and keep the festivities going all night long. Suspend string lights across your yard to brighten the backyard and create a romantic feel, or place paper lanterns in your trees for an ethereal vibe.

Fire and Water
Adding a water element or a fire pit in your backyard immediately elevates your look. Invest in a large fountain to make for the ideal statement piece and create a calming sound in the background. If you loved campouts when you were younger, bring the warmth of a fire to your patio. Install an outdoor fireplace, or buy a ready-made fire pitthe kids will love roasting marshmallows!

5 easy tips to keep the bathroom organized with kids!

If you have little kids at home, you know that the bathroom is a spot that gets trashed everyday.  I am here to share a few tips on how we try to keep our bathroom ship-shape with out 3 kiddos.

Tip 1 and 2 Rob Hooks

Tip 1: Hang robe hooks low enough for the kids to be able to hang up their towels themselves.  We hung ours over our heater so that in the winter it also acts as a towel warmer.

Tip 2: Hang a robe hook low enough for the kids to reach to hang the hand towel. I know from experience that the towel never makes it back on to the towel rod because it was too high and the towel was always on the floor... now, it is on the hook!

***I got my robe hooks from Unhinge.  They are super reasonable for prices, ship fast and come with quality hardware to install. They have many quality bathroom hardware for you to choose from.  We love how these hooks are helping us keep out bathroom clean in style!   Check out Unhinged Hardware here!***

Tip 3: How to hide the toys.
I have a bin that we keep the bath toys in (I believe it was supposed to be a magazine holder).  When I have company coming over we take the whole bin and put it in the shower and close the curtain... toys gone!

Tip 4: Where to put the extra Toilet Paper.
I don't like to keep my extra toilet paper under the sink because it is messy under there and I don't want my guests to have to search for it.  So I got a Paper Towel holder and placed it on the back of the toilet and it is a great way to stack the TP.  This way I can also see if we need to restock since it is out in the open.  I sometimes turn it into a snowman in the winter too.

Tip 5: Brush/comb Organizer
Another kitchen tool turned bathroom hack. I got this hanging basket at Ikea.  It is supposed to be used in the kitchen but it also works great in the bathroom to keep all those brushes, combs, make-up brushes up off the sink or toilet.  Easy to put in and take out of and the kids can do it too. We hang it on our towel bar.  It could also work for bath toys hanging off an extra shower rod - like this.

What are some easy ways you keep organized in the bathroom with kids?  We would love to hear your ideas!

A home tour of Fawnda's House

We finished a bunch of project this spring/summer.  So I thought I would show you some pictures our our house.  I don't have before pictures of everything...but I will show you the ones that I do have.

The living room:
BEFORE:

After:

Hard to believe it is the same room.  We moved the toys out, got rid of A LOT of furniture, painted the walls (Sherwin-Williams popular gray)  and woodwork (White), and got the hardwood floor refinished.

The Kitchen:
Before:

After:

We painted the walls (popular gray) and painted the cabinets white.

The Dinning room:
(no before pictures)
We got rid of some furniture and also painted one of the walls (popular gray)  It is right off of the living room.

The Master bedroom:
(No before pictures)
We painted, and added the bottom paneling.  We got new carpet.  We also added the plantain shutters on the windows.

The boy's room:
We didn't change much in here... mostly just moved furniture around.

The Girl's room:
No changes here.

The Sun Room and backyard:
We rearranged our furniture out here and it added so much space!  We LOVE this room and spend as much time as we can during spring/summer/fall!

Here is the front of our home.
A few years ago we added a stall onto the garage (it only has a 1 car garage when we moved it).  At the same time we painted, added the front porch, and the stone to the house.

It seems as if we are always working on our house some how... but right now we have all of our projects done...for now!

I hope you enjoyed a little look into our home.  We will be decorating for Christmas after Thanksgiving so I will try to remember to show some pictures then.

Martha Stewart Craft Week: Easy Halloween Wall Decor!

I was sent a big box of crafting supplies from Martha Stewart!  It is a crafter's dream come true!   I had so much fun creating fun projects that I have deemed this week: Martha Stewart Craft Week!

First up: Easy Halloween Wall Decor!

Here is what you will need:
Martha Stewart Yarn
Martha Stewart Paper Bat Silhouettes
Wreath foam (I got mine from the dollar store)

1. First wrap your wreath foam with the yarn.  I used hot glue to secured the yarn to the back at the start and finish.

2. Open up your bats and fold them on the scored lines.

3. Hang your wreath on the wall.  Use the adhesive dots that come with them to hang the bat on the wall.  I also used straight pins to attach a bat to the wreath.

And you are done!  Quick and easy and it gives a big and fun effect!  I love how the bats make shadows on the wall.   My son LOVES it because he is really into bat man and he says it is like living in the bat cave. :)

Micheal's has a 50% off coupon of one Martha Stewart Crafts item to help you get started on your crafting!

***Disclaimer:  I was provided with the Martha Stewart Craft supplies for free.  However, my options and crafts are 100% mine***
